In 2021, college athletes in the NCAA gained the opportunity to benefit financially from their name, image and likeness — known as NIL regulations. The NIL era has allowed college athletes to save for the future and seek professional financial advice in a way many 18- to 22-year-olds can't. NCAA athletes hire agents and financial advisors to help them negotiate NIL deals, ushering in new financial responsibilities. CNN —At the start of her college basketball career, right in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, Caitlin Clark grew accustomed to playing at empty venues. It just continues to add to the allure of a great basketball player.”Clark’s dominance has coincided with a booming interesting in women’s college basketball, evident long before this year’s March Madness got underway. “But because we are on national television now, because we are in the spotlight more as a sport, as women’s basketball, people are talking about it. Which all begs the question: how does an opposing team stop Caitlin Clark? “So we’re going to have to find a different way to win than stopping Caitlin Clark.”

In 1916, the composer Gustav Holst took a young conductor, Adrian Boult, on a long walk through Kew Gardens and Richmond Park in London. A few years earlier, Boult had written to Holst asking whether he had composed any music for small orchestra that he could perform. Few were better equipped than they were to introduce Boult to the score; as rehearsal pianists, amanuenses, copyists and performers, the two would be intimately involved in the creation of “The Planets,” one of the most popular orchestral pieces of the 20th century. Documents from Lasker’s archive at the Royal College of Music in London show that this way of introducing “The Planets” to other artists wasn’t so unusual in its genesis. In an introduction to the piece given by Lasker on BBC radio in 1951, she said, “We had the great joy of introducing the work to all the great conductors in this country, and, after the war, to many of the great continental conductors.”

Liselotte Sabroe | AFP | Getty ImagesWegovy obesity drug maker Novo Nordisk surpassed Tesla in market value, after fresh early trial data showed positive results for its new experimental weight loss pill. Novo Nordisk is now the 12th most valuable company in the world, with a market cap of $604 billion — ahead of Tesla's $569 billion, according to FactSet data. 8The uptick of Thursday extends a months-long rally for Novo Nordisk, as excitement grows around weight loss drugs and their potential wider applications. The early amycretin data marks a fresh milestone for Novo Nordisk, potentially offering a more effective and less intrusive alternative to its already widely successful injection-based Wegovy and Ozempic drugs. Wegovy showed weight loss of 6% in a 12-week trial, while Ozempic is a diabetes treatment.

The New York Philharmonic’s program this week contains familiar names, Gustav Holst and György Ligeti. But in between is a first for the orchestra: “Stabat Mater,” a 1951 work for contralto and strings by Julia Perry. This will not be the first time that Perry has shared the stage with more well-known composers. The mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges, who will make her Philharmonic debut on Wednesday performing in the “Stabat Mater” solo part, said of the piece: “I love the vocal writing. It’s intense, it’s very introspective, it’s very intimate and also very extreme.” Dima Slobodeniouk, who will conduct the program, described it as “logically and beautifully written.”

BERKELEY, California, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Meghan Holst studies the broadnose sevengill shark, so she was naturally concerned when record-setting rain this year altered the shark's nursery grounds in San Francisco Bay. Next, perhaps, will come California Fish and Game Commission protections for the sharks in San Francisco Bay, which she considers a nursing and pupping ground for a species believed to be in decline. San Francisco Bay is one of the world's only known year-round nurseries for the species, Holst said, making the habitat critical to monitor. [1/4]FILE PHOTO-Researchers cast lines to catch broadnose sevengill sharks from their vessel in the San Francisco Bay, California, U.S., June 15, 2023. So if something happens to San Francisco Bay, then we might lose an entire cohort of these sevengill juveniles," Holst said.

Novo Nordisk on Thursday said it will acquire Inversago Pharma, a privately held obesity drug maker, for up to $1.08 billion to broaden the Danish company's blockbuster weight loss portfolio. The deal's price depends on whether Inversago reaches certain development and sales goals, Novo Nordisk said in a release. Canada-based Inversago develops experimental therapies to treat people with obesity, diabetes and other conditions affecting the body's metabolism. Meanwhile, Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Ozempic work by mimicking a hormone produced in the gut to suppress a person's appetite. Novo Nordisk intends to further investigate the potential of the oral drug for obesity and obesity-related complications.

Until now, some health insurers have been reluctant to cover the drug, given its high costs and a lack of data around its underlying health benefits. But the results of the latest trial data could change that. "Do I think most payers will adopt [obesity drugs] overnight because of the SELECT trial? According to the World Health Organization, global obesity rates have almost tripled over the past decade. Novo Nordisk shares soared by 17% following the release of the trial results on Tuesday.

Packages of the weight-loss drug Wegovy from the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk lie on the sales counter in a Danish pharmacy. Shares of Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk soared on Tuesday, after late-stage trial data showed that its obesity drug Wegovy reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attacks or strokes by 20%, compared with a placebo. Shares of Novo Nordisk rose nearly 16% during mid-morning deals, before paring gains. Martin Holst Lange, executive vice president for development at Novo Nordisk, said that the results showed that the company's obesity drug "has the potential to change how obesity is regarded and treated." "Therefore, we are very excited about the results from SELECT showing that semaglutide 2.4 mg reduces the risk of cardiovascular events."

CNN —The weight loss drug Wegovy was shown to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke or heart disease-related death by 20% in a major clinical trial in people with cardiovascular disease, the first to show a weight loss drug alone can have such protective effects. It called the five-year trial “Select.”The finding of a 20% reduction in heart risk is higher than many experts had anticipated. A similar trial for the type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic, which uses the same ingredient, semaglutide, previously showed it could reduce cardiovascular risk by 26% — but no trial had yet shown a risk reduction in people without diabetes. It said it will present detailed results from the trial at a scientific conference later this year. It’s awaiting US Food and Drug Administration approval for weight loss as well.

The study called SELECT involved 17,500 patients aged 45 years or older with no prior history of diabetes and started almost five years ago testing if the weekly injection has medical benefits. The landmark trial data shows Wegovy has "the potential to change how obesity is regarded and treated," said Martin Holst Lange, executive vice president for development at Novo Nordisk, in a statement. Novo Nordisk said it expects to file for regulatory approvals of a label indication expansion for the weekly injection in the United States and European Union this year. The detailed results from the trial will be presented at a scientific conference later in 2023.

Northwestern researchers have created the world's first audio simulation of twinkling stars. They did this by converting simulations of gas waves produced inside stars into sound waves. They then converted these heat-produced waves into sound waves — a process known as sonification — to produce an "eerily fascinating" recreation of what this flickering phenomenon should sound like. "I think we were expecting it to sound unpleasant, but we were surprised by the sounds we heard!" Anders explained to Insider that many types of waves produce inherent twinkling in stars (the field of asteroseismology is dedicated to observing them).

But the release of half a dozen movies about brands — Barbie, Flamin' Hot Cheetos, Tetris, Nike Air, BlackBerry, and Beanie Babies — in six months isn't just the result of Hollywood groupthink and coincidence. But just as these brand-centric movies ring hollow, so does the gig economy they're catering to. While the plot isn't about the making of Barbie, Barbie and Ken do step outside Barbie Land to peek behind the curtains of their creation.) As more companies look to gig workers to replace full-time jobs, more workers take up gig work. As the economy continues to emphasize the importance of self-branding through gig work, brand movies will continue to resonate.

The results are another boost for Novo Nordisk whose weekly Wegovy injection has transformed the weight-loss market since its U.S. launch in June 2021, capturing the attention of patients, investors and even celebrities worldwide. The Danish drugmaker said in a statement that the headline results were statistically significant and showed superior weight loss when compared to a placebo. A global launch of the oral 50 milligram (mg) semaglutide drug is contingent on portfolio prioritisations and manufacturing capacity, the company added without giving further details. The results are comparable to the company's Wegovy injection, said Martin Holst Lange, head of development at Novo Nordisk. Novo Nordisk has had supply issues and struggled to keep up with soaring U.S. demand for Wegovy.
Charles III has commissioned new works for his coronation, adding to the rich tapestry of pieces composed for the occasion. The first coronation music was likely sung chants, which, starting in 1603 with the coronation of James I, were refashioned into coronation anthems now with English text. Both have since become staples in the coronation service. And at the most recent coronation, comparisons between Elizabeth II and Charles III are unsurprisingly being made. Charles III’s coronation is set to usher in the new Carolean era, in the hopes that it will reflect its namesake Charles II and his contributions to art and music.
